Brief description

Area of Concentration

Greater Area: Engineering
Area of Knowledge: Engineering I
Area of Concentration: Environmental Technologies

Economic development inevitably generates social and environmental impacts where it is being carried out. However, there is a clear need to foster such development from a holistic perspective, avoiding any of the areas between economic, social and environmental to advance over the others. Hence, the area of concentration of Environmental Technologies aims to conduct scientific research to contribute to technological development seeking industrial waste recovery, improvement of effluent treatment systems as well as emissions and waste, production process optimization aiming at waste reduction, natural resources monitoring and diagnose of possible negative impacts, and to write proposals for the restoration of degraded areas.

Lines of Research

1. Waste Treatment and Recovery Technologies
This line of research seeks to characterize waste treatment and recovery; to identify waste as possible sources of raw materials to make new products; to develop cleaner and more efficient treatment technologies and to optimize industrial processes while reducing waste generation.

2. Technologies to Control and Prevent Environmental Impacts
This line of research aims to identify negative environmental impacts and to develop technologies that can reduce the effects of anthropogenic activity arising from the presence of chemical and microbial agents in the environment. It’s focused on the study of anthropization of ecosystems and its environmental impacts, involving the local biota; the study of environmental contaminants such as organometallics, pesticides, heavy metals, among others, with a proven potential to induce physiological changes in aquatic organisms; and the development of methods and techniques that can contribute to control and prevention of negative environmental impacts.
